Origin

The origin of the American Silver Eagle coin dates back to the mid-1980s, when the United States government sought to dispose of its surplus silver stockpile. In response, the Liberty Coin Act was signed into law on July 9, 1985, authorizing the production of a one-ounce silver bullion coin. The Silver Eagle was born, replacing the Eisenhower Dollar as the primary large silver coin. This coin offered collectors and investors a beautiful, pure silver coin that quickly gained global recognition.

Design

The Silver Eagle is a modern coin influenced by classic American coinage design. The Silver Eagle dollar’s designer, John Mercanti, drew inspiration from the wildly popular Walking Liberty Half Dollar by Adolph Weinman. The obverse of both the Silver Eagle and Walking Liberty Half feature Lady Liberty draped in the American Flag and walking towards the sun while holding laurel and oak branches.

The reverse design from Mercanti shows the iconic Heraldic Eagle behind a shield with its right talon grasping an olive branch while it has arrows in its left. Above the Eagle are thirteen stars representing the original American colonies. The Mercanti reverse was used until 2021, when it was replaced with a new design by Emily Damstra. This new reverse drew inspiration from the Eisenhower Dollar design, featuring a powerful bald eagle with its wings outstretched landing on a branch.

Circulation and Availability

The American Silver Eagle, first introduced in 1986, quickly became a popular silver investment and collectible coin. With millions minted annually, production peaked in 2015, when over 47 million coins were struck. Its only major change was the 2021 change in design that ended production of the classic Silver Eagle. While the original design is no longer minted, both versions remain highly sought after by investors and collectors alike.
