Bullion Coins

US bullion is a fascinating and valuable part of American history. These coins are minted with a high content of precious metal, such as gold or silver, and are valued primarily for their bullion content. These iconic coins were first introduced in the United States in the 1980s as a way for individuals to invest in precious metals and hedge against inflation. They are no longer used as currency today, but their beautiful designs, high quality, and historical significance make them a prized addition to any collection.

Expand your collection today with one of L&C Coins’ history-rich gold bullion for sale. You can purchase from L&C Coins with confidence, as we offer a 15-day return privilege on all purchases, and flexible layaway plans.

The History of Platinum, Palladium, Silver, and Gold Bullion for Sale

Origin

The origin of US bullion coins can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s when the price of gold began to rise dramatically, leading to increased interest in investing in precious metals. Prior to this time, the US government had not produced any gold coins for general circulation since the 1930s, and silver coins were phased out of circulation in the 1960s due to a silver shortage.

In response to this growing interest in precious metals, the United States Congress passed legislation in 1985 authorizing the production and sale of silver and gold bullion for investment purposes. The first of these coins to be produced was the Gold Eagle, which was introduced in 1986.

Bullion coins have numismatic, collectible value, and there are designs to appeal to every collector. At L&C Coins, our inventory of silver and gold bullion for sale includes regular releases of American Silver, Gold, and Platinum Eagles. Gold Buffalos, First Spouse Gold, and 5-ounce silver quarters are also available if you’re searching for something more unique.

Design

The design of bullion is an important aspect of their value and appeal, combining beautiful artistry with the value of precious metals. The designer of the Gold Eagle, Silver Eagle, and Platinum Eagle coins was John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Mercanti's designs are inspired by classic American coinage and feature iconic images of American heritage.

The Gold Eagle design was chosen to celebrate the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, California. The design features a family of eagles on the reverse, symbolizing American family values, and was inspired by the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin from the early 20th century. The obverse of both the Gold Eagle and the later Platinum Eagle feature an image of Lady Liberty, symbolizing the values of freedom and liberty.

Circulation and Availability

US bullion coins are minted by the United States Mint and are primarily sold to investors and collectors for their bullion content. Unlike standard US currency, bullion isn’t meant for use in everyday transactions and are instead valued for their precious metal content. Since the introduction of the Gold Eagle in 1986, tens of millions of these precious coins have been produced by the United States Mint.

As of 2021, the United States Mint produces several different types of platinum, silver, and gold bullion for sale, including the Gold Eagle, Silver Eagle, Platinum Eagle, American Buffalo, and American Eagle. The Mint produces these coins in a range of sizes and denominations, ranging from 1/10th of an ounce to 1 ounce, with the exception of the American Buffalo, which is only available in 1 ounce.
