The Brilliant American Gold Eagle Coin

Origin

Bullion coins were first authorized for production with the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Following the passing of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the US Mint began the American Eagle Coin Program, a program that would design, produce, and distribute bullion coins. These coins were a convenient and cost-effective way for investors to add the precious metals silver, gold, platinum, and palladium to their investment portfolios. Since 1986, they have been produced and offered in four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Although minted for investment purposes, they have become highly sought-after coins due to their beautiful craftsmanship and design homage to Saint-Gauden’s Double Eagle.

Design

The American Gold Eagle utilizes a slightly-altered version of the Lady Liberty design first used on the 1907-1933 $20 Double Eagle coin designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. On the Gold Eagle, Lady Liberty appears in more detail on the obverse, striding forward with flowing hair. The 1986-2021 reverse, which was designed by Miley Busiek, depicts a bald eagle carrying an olive branch and flying over a nest with another eagle and hatchlings. To commemorate the coin’s 35th anniversary in 2021, the coin’s reverse was refreshed by designer Jennie Norris. The reverse now features a portrait of an eagle, updated with security features like reeded edges.
