They were first suggested by John Calvin and others in 1560 in order to limit participation in communion (The Lord's Supper) to church members only. They were issued in England and many of the larger British colonies. They are made of lead or other base metals and come in a variety of shapes: round oval, square or oblong. 5000+ types of been recorded. They were replaced with communion cards at the end of the 19th century. 7 different.
